People are basically selfish.
It is hard to live in a selfless way, doing things for other people, putting their needs before your own. Very few people can live selflessly for more than a small percentage of their life. It runs counter to the laws of nature, the survival of the fittest. We are selfish for good reason: it helps us survive. But the highest level of evolution, the next meta level is to place survival of the group ahead of survival of the individual. We must work at this.
(The difficulty in putting others needs before your own is the basis for what Christians call sin. People express the non-Christian attitude in various ways: "You've gotta take care of number one," or "If you don't look out for yourself, nobody will do it for you.")
