The things I do for myself are meaningless. But, at times, I can do something for someone else to give them pleasure they would have missed, to help them win when they would have lost, to insure their success when they were headed for failure, to save a life that was about to end. It is only in doing things for others in a selfless way (ie: doing things for God) that our lives have meaning.
(This is the revolutionary insight brought into the world by Christ. It is this insight that makes Christianity unique among religions. It is this insight that makes me a Christian. It is true that throughout history, an occasional great individual has had insight along these lines but it was Christ and his followers who showed us that it must be made the center of everything we do.)
