How clearly the sky reveals God's glory! How plainly it shows what he has done! Each day announces it to the following day; each night repeats it to the next. No speech or words are used, no sound is heard; yet their message goes out to all the world and is heard to the ends of the earth. Psalms 19:1-4
The voice of the Lord is heard on the seas; the glorious God thunders, and his voice echoes over the ocean. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars, . . . The voice of the Lord makes the lightning flash. His voice makes the desert shake; Psalm 29:3-8
We cannot understand the great things he does, and to his miracles there is no end. Job 9:10
Christians and Jews believe that we can figure out the plan (at least partially) and learn about the goal by observing the direction. It is from this intellectual climate that science emerged. It is in this that science and theology find their common roots. Could there be a clearer example of the directionality of history than the evolution of species? Could there be a more complelling example of planning than the incorporation of self-organizing systems in the apparently chaotic structure of the universe.
Christians believe that God is revealed in History. We find out what God is by observing what God does. (See What God? for more details.) This is why the Bible is primarily a History book.
